Their plan was to distribute a handful of posters in New York in which they highlighted sexism and racism in the art world — and that would be that. We had put an address on the posters — there was no internet then — and we had all these letters from people who were angry and others who were naked local girls about what we were doing. Since then, the Guerrilla Girls — who each use the names of dead women artists as pseudonyms — have created over projects in the form of posters, billboards, videos and pamphlets about discrimination and the ways the art world is controlled by wealth and power.

Less than a year after publishing Guerrilla Girls: The Art of Behaving Badlya book documenting 35 years of art-based mischief, they are now participating in Art Nightthe annual British arts festival which, this year, is going nationwide across 13 towns and cities. She mentions the metoo movement, and says evidence of the ways men objectify and abuse women has always been in our galleries.

There have been various unsuccessful attempts to unmask the members of Guerrilla Girls over the years — we talk over Zoom with the cameras off, naturally.

They say their anonymity is important in order to keep the attention on the work. While the group has observed marginal improvements in terms of representation since the mids, their remit as protestors has expanded. Both were taking their first steps in the art world at time and trying to get their work out in the world.

Guerrilla Girls have never been under any illusions about the enormity of the task of cleaning up the art world and achieving equality.
